Where to take the ferry from Capri to Sorrento
Ferries to Sorrento typically set sail from the port of Marina Grande, which is on the northern side of Capri. This is the island’s main port, where all catamarans and hydrofoils arrive and depart. Around the port you will find cafés, restaurants and shops, as well as ticket offices, car and scooter rental agencies and boat tour operators.
How to get to the port of Capri
The port of Capri is connected to the rest of the island by funicular, bus and taxi (private cars are not allowed on the island for non-residents).
- From Capri town (La Piazzetta): the fastest option is the funicular, which reaches Marina Grande in about 4-5 min., with departures every 10-15 min. from 6:30 to 23:00. Alternatively, you can take the SIPPIC bus.
- From Anacapri: you can take the direct Anacapri - Marina Grande bus, or take the bus to Capri and then continue by funicular. The journey takes about 25 min., with departures every 30 min.
- From Marina Piccola or other areas: you can use the local bus services connecting Capri and Anacapri, with intermediate stops and, if necessary, a transfer in Capri or Anacapri.
The island's iconic open-top taxis serve all areas accessible by road. You can find them at the port, near La Piazzetta, in Anacapri and at Marina Piccola. They are more expensive than public transport, but are a convenient option, especially if you're travelling with lots of luggage.
Where does the ferry arrive in Sorrento?
Ferries from Capri normally dock at Marina Piccola, the main port of Sorrento, which is located just bellow the historic center. It’s about a 15-min walk to Piazza Tasso, the central square of Sorrento, however this involves stairs and uphill streets.
Alternatively, there are local buses that connect the port with the center and other areas in town and taxis are usually available outside the port. You can also hop on the public elevator from the port to the Villa Comunale gardens, which is a stone’s throw from the center of Sorrento.
In the area around Marina Piccola, there are cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as shops, ticket offices and parking lots.
